Carmen Callil is a publisher, writer and critic and is the founder of Virago Press.

Callil was born and educated in Melbourne, Australia, and came to the UK in 1960; Peter Conrad states: she “is part-Lebanese, part-Irish and wholly Australian”. She began working in publishing five years later and in 1972 founded the Virago Press, which she continued to chair until 1995. At Virago Carmen was responsible for the creation and development of the Virago modern classics list and published writers such as Iris Murdoch, VS Pritchett, AS Byatt, Michael Ignatieff, Alan Hollinghurst and Toni Morrison.
