David Kendall is an independent consultant who manages the The Reading Agency’s Six Book Challenge in prisons, which in 2014 ran in more than 100 UK prisons, with over 9,000 prisoners taking part. The target for 2015 is 10,000. Through the scheme many prisoners re discover a love of reading, or start reading for the first time.

“The Six Book Challenge is a great way of getting people back into reading, and for making functional skills more interesting and exciting.” John Hewitson, prison governor at HMP Styal

“It’s given me more get up and go. Just to pick up a book and read. Before that I’d never thought about reading a book. I’d rather sit there and watch TV. If it weren’t for the Six Book Challenge I wouldn’t have read at all”Mathew, HMP Pentonville
