Gaye Sculthorpe is Curator and Section Head, Oceania at The British Museum. She is the curator of ‘The BP Exhibition Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation’ showing at the British Museum from 23 April to 2 August 2015 and contributing author of the accompanying publication of the same name. Prior to moving to the U.K. to take up this position in 2013, Gaye worked in Australia as a Member of the National Native Title Tribunal and prior to that as Head of the Department of Indigenous Cultures at Museum Victoria. Gaye comes from Tasmania where her famous ancestor, Fanny Cochrane Smith (1834-1905) was the only Tasmanian Aboriginal person to record traditional songs – on wax cylinders in 1899 and 1903.
